Top 10 Diet Fads for Pinays

Posted on | April 23, 2010 | No Comments

I’ve seen it before and I’m seeing it again — friends whose weights are comparable to seesaws:  one minute they’re weights are up and the next minute they’re down. The reason, I think, why they — I mean WE — cannot maintain to keep our weights within what’s ideal for our BMI is because those diets are meant as short-term solutions.  It could be because you want to lose weigh for that special event or because you just broke up with your boyfriend and you want to lure him back to you with your hot new bod. As such, once you have achieved your short-term goal, you go back on eating anything you want, as much as you want, anytime that you want.

But I’m not planning to deliver diets tips for this post. I meant to list the top 10 diet fads for Pinays. These are diet fads that my friends have actually tried. Some may have worked, but others may haven’t.  Here are they:

1.  After-six diet — My sister has personally tried this and she did lose weight a little after a month. I tried but after a month, I couldn’t just stay away from the 7-11 and Ministop. Of course, it doesn’t help that I sleep during the day and work at nights. Tough luck.

2. Southbeach diet – A lot of my colleagues at the office I used to work tried this diet. One of hisour  workmates prepares the food and they pay for it. It was a big sideline for her but after a few months, a lot reverted back to eating normally. So much for group effort. On the other hand, several celebrities swear that this diet is highly effective. These includes Korina Sanchez and Rachel Alejandro.

3. No rice diet — This is what I call the variation of the low -carb diet. Since experts say that rice is a major culprit in burgeoning bellies, my sister tried this diet. She got used to it for 4 months then the holiday season came.  The diet went off the door and the belly came back!

4. Cabbage Soup diet —  I love cabbage but this diet isn’t for me. According to a friend, let’s hide her under the name Winona, you make a soup out of cabbages, onions, and peppers. These three main ingredients speed up your body’s metabolism. I would try this diet if you can add cream to the soup. Unfortunately, you cannot.  Next diet please!

5. Juice Therapy — This I like.  I can drink fresh fruit juice or shake all day but I cannot do it for a couple of days. I need to have some carbs, whether it’s bad for me or not.

6. Water therapy — No, you are not going to drink water all day. Instead, you are only going to drink warm water during mealtime. No ice! You also cannot drink softdrinks or juices. The logic behind this is that the warm water will help you digest the food fast. You do not take anything cold because it slows down the digestion of fat. Makes sense if you think about it.  And the best thing is you can drink all the cold drinks you can after an hour. It’s definitely worth a try.

7. Cleansing diet — Also called Ernie Baron diet (yes, the weatherman!), I heard about this from my friend’s father. After he underwent bypass surgery, the doctor asked him to diet. He can only eat fresh fruits and water for two weeks. His 38-inch waist line became 30 inches after two weeks. Works great!

8. Medical diet — This diet was tried and tested by a nurse friend of mine from UK. She says that this is diet given to surgery patients. Here it is:

THIS DIET IS FOR TWO WEEKS ONLY
Abstain from everything not included in the diet and be sure to eat what is assigned rather than go without. Do not change lunch for dinner or visa versa.
NO SUBSTITUTES __ NO ALCOHOL_ NO EATING BETWEEN MEALS
All vegetables are without butter, salads without oil or dressing. Lean part of the meat and nothing else.
• Coffee black, no sugar
• Tea clear with lemon no sugar
Weight should drop about 20 pounds in two weeks. Basis of the diet is chemical and is maintenance of normal energy.
BREAKFAST Same each morning Grapefruit, 1 or two eggs and coffee
MONDAY LUNCH Fruit salad, put in anything you like eat as much as you like
DINNER 2 eggs, mixed green salad, one piece of dry toast, grapefruit and Coffee

TUESDAY
LUNCH Cold chicken, tomatoes and grapefruit
DINNER Steak, tomatoes, lettuce, celery, cucumber, olives and coffee
WEDNESDAY

DINNER 2 Lamb chops, celery, cucumber, tomatoes and coffee
THURSDAY LUNCH Same as Monday
DINNER 2 eggs, cottage cheese, cabbage and one dry piece of toast
FRIDAY LUNCH Eggs, spinach and coffee
DINNER Fish, mixed green salad, one dry piece of toast and grapefruit
SATURDAY LUNCH 2 eggs, spinach and coffee
DINNER Plentyr of steak, celery, cucumber, tomatoes, and coffee
SUNDAY LUNCH Same as Monday
DINNER Chicken, tomatoes, carrots, cooked cabbage, grapefruit and coffee

9. Chinese doctor’s diet — I have no official name for this one, but this is a diet that my friend and her new family adheres to. They only eat steamed fish and vegetables and rice. Meat is allowed every once in a while but not chicken. Why? Because chicken, according to the Chinese doctor, is the dirtiest animal of all.  I may be able to pull this off for a few months myself but I cannot stay away from chicken forever.

10. Apple diet — This one, according to my friend bubbles, is effective. Her brother  would not eat breakfast.. have apple for lunch then normal diet for dinner. He lost a few pounds. I have to pass on this one because I cannot, for the love of everything holy, eat apple only for lunch.

So there you go!  That’s the top 10 diet fads for Pinays! Other diets worth mentioning are the Atkins diet, hcg diet, and the Mediterranean diet. I haven’t met anyone who has tried this or knows someone who tried it so I didn’t include it in my list.  Happy dieting!
