For fans of the comic book, Green Lantern is a much-awaited movie. A lot of buzz has been generated about the film prior to its release and I guess people were expecting a lot from it. After its release though, critics slammed the film for its poorly written story line and the hurried pacing. With this in mind, I watched the Green Lantern with every intention of finding something good to write about it. In a way, I wasn’t disappointed.
Before I proceed, let me just say that I am a big fan of science-fiction. I particularly love superhero movies because they’re like modern-day fairytales – the good always triumphs over the bad. I also love Ryan Reynolds. He does the cocky but lovable guy really well. He does so again in Green Lantern and that is the only redeeming part of the movie.
What I didn’t Like About the Green Lantern
- Fast pacing . The movie was rushed. I know it is a challenge to keep a movie, especially a science fiction, under 2 hours but i wouldn’t mind spending another 20 to 30 minutes to really get to know the characters. Or perhaps the director should have done away with some of the scenes and replaced them with meaningful ones. For example, that opening scene with Hal Jordan in bed with a woman is not necessary. The movie could have started with him driving like crazy to get to the base. Both scenes will establish that he is late, right?
- Blake Lively is no Carol Ferris. I like Blake. I think that she’s wonderful in Gossip Girl. But dyeing her hair brunette does not give her a commanding presence that her character, Carol Ferris, needs. I think the makeup artists focused on making her look like the temptress Serena in GG, rather than the military-trained, strait laced Carol.
- No chemistry between Ryan and Blake. I don’t know about you but I feel as though the “intimate” scenes between them looked “forced.” I get the sense that they are acting to appear attracted to each other. If there is any hanky panky between these two actors behind the scenes, they did no translate well in the movie.
- Forgettable script. I have a Tumblr blog where I post memorable quotes from movies and TV shows. I was looking forward to updating it with Green Lantern quotes but for the life of me, I couldn’t remember any line from the movie, not even the Green Lantern oath. When I got home, I tried to remember really hard, and was relieved that there is one line that stood out for me. Here it is:
Gravity’s a bitch.
I left cinema with no overwhelming urge to recommend Green Lantern to my friends. It depended too much on the charm of Ryan Reynolds.
