Guys are very lucky. Unlike their female counterparts, they do not suffer from annoying monthly menses that can be painful for some women. But more importantly, they don’t suffer from irrational cravings for something salty and sweet whenever that time of the month comes. Every month, a week or so before the menses finally come, I and my girl friends get this insane urge to munch on bags of chips, drink softdrinks, and lick chocolate off our fingers. Diet be damned.
Thankfully, there’s now a healthier alternative to the red-and-white chips that I usually snack on during my PMS: Soyami Soya Chips. Made from real, non genetically modified soya (yes, the one used in “taho”), Soyami Soya Chips contain no brain-cell damaging MSG or heart disease-causing transfat. It’s also high in protein and calcium, which makes it good for your teeth and bones. It’s available in three delicious flavors: Original, Pizza and White Cheddar.
I first got wind of Soyami Soya Chips from the reality TV show Pinoy Biggest Loser. The personal fitness trainers and nutritionists in that show were really tough but they allowed the heavyweight contestants to eat Soyami chips because it has 0% transfat and the Original and White Cheddar flavors only contain 110 calories per serving. It satisfies the contestants’ craving for junk food without actually being a junk food.
My favorite flavor is white cheddar. I pack one in my bag whenever I’m having my PMS so I could eat it at the bus or at work. Because it’s a bit pricier than the usual chips you can buy from sari sari stores, I limit myself to one bag a day. It actually has dieting effect because it prevents me from buying two to three bags of the usual chips. The only drawback is that I have to buy this in major supermarkets like SM Hypermarket since it’s not readily available in homegrown grocery stores or sari-sari stores.
TRIVIA: DID YOU KNOW THAT SOYAMI SOYA CHIPS ARE DESIGNATED AS HALAL SNACKS? THIS MEANS THAT OUR MUSLIM BROTHERS AND SISTERS CAN EAT THIS BECAUSE IT DOES NOT VIOLATE ANY ISLAMIC LAW.
