One of the things I miss most about UP Diliman is Mang Jimmy’s. Back in 2003, this is a very popular food establishment among UP students because of its free eat-all-you-can rice and free 3 plus 1 dishes. An order of its bestselling sizzling pork sisig and tapa mix used to cost only Php90 and it’s good for two people. So you can just imagine how many students and employees flock here everyday for cheap food choices.
Now, 7 years later, Mang Jimmy’s still looks the same with a few changes in its laid back design. The wooden signboard is now replaced by an orange, backlighted signboard. The old refrigerator that served as fish tank is nowhere to be seen. The love birds are gone, probably dead.
As for the food, well, the Tapa Mix was as I remembered it. The sizzling pork sisig was disappointing. Instead of mayonnaise, they topped it with egg. That ruined the dish for me. The crispy pata was a major hit among us. It was cooked just the way we like it — crunchy skin and soft meat. It was worth every centavo that we paid Php250 for.
The sizzling squid is better than I remembered it. They used to serve five small squids, but now they served 2 big ones in gravy. You know that the squid is fresh and cooked just right because of its soft and flavorful meat.
After the meal I gave myself a pat in the back because I only ate half a cup of rice. Yes, I managed to lay off the rice and the results are great. Hopefully, I will be able to completely forgo the rice because it’s one of the quick weight loss strategies that I use.
Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the menu. In seven years, Mang Jimmy’s prices have changed very little. What used to cost Php90, you could now buy for Php100. The pricier meals, priced before at Php180, can now be ordered for Php250. The rice cost Php10 per cup. It used to be free but it’ still reasonably priced at Php10. All in wall, you still get the value of your money at Mang Jimmy’s.
