3 Healthy Ways to Help Save the Earth
Manila has been hell this past week. Temperatures have soared to record-breaking highs and Filipinos are talking about in social media, Twitter in particular. My personal view is that this extremely hot weather is Mother Nature’s way of punishing us for being such slobby caretakers of the world. We have laid to waste what was good – cut down too many trees, leveled hills and mountains, turned bodies of water into flowing dump sites. And this unbearable heat, Global Warming, is what we get.
Is there time to still save the world before those icebergs melt and drown half of the world? I’d like to think so. On my part, I’ve taken a job in a very green industry and make sure I don’t use coffee shop supplies in excess. I have also started doing the following healthy activities to help save the Earth:
1. Play outdoors.
While Facebook games, PSPs, and Xboxes keep some friends occupied, I recently bought a volleyball and decided that it’s a much better way to “exercise.” I’ve been teaching my daughter to play and so far we’ve done it every single day. I get to bond with my daughter without the use of anything that consumes electric power. Less use of electricity for me, more playtime with my daughter.
2. Take a walk.
What do you do when you’re bored? I’m a certified couch potato so I eat while watching my favorite TV shows with the electric fan blasting. Now, I’ve taken to walking to the public market when I have nothing to do even if the sun is high. That’s less electric consumption for me!
I also walk to the bank when I need to withdraw money or when I shop for groceries. That’s one less passenger on a tricycle that runs on gasoline and belches carbon monoxide.
FYI: Since I started walking, I lost four pounds already.
3. Eat more greens.
I’ve never been a fan of fresh salads and used to call it “damo.” But for the last two weeks, I’ve been eating greens — iceberg and crystal lettuce to be exact — with Lady’s Choice Caesar Salad dressing. I realized that as I was eating those that I’m indirectly helping the environment by not eating processed meat and canned goods that take so much energy to produce. Plus, I’m helping the locals who produce these greens.
Playing outdoors, taking a walk, and eating more greens are all guaranteed ways to make sure that you remain in the pink of health and have no need for a portable ekg machine to check your heart health at home every single day. They’re also surefire ways to leave a a little less carbon footprint in a world that’s heating up every second of the day.
Every step counts!
We can all do little things that, if done collectively, can help save the world we all live in. In the fight against global warming, every small step counts. Please do yours.
