ABS-CBN’s Harapan: The Vice-Presidential Debate

Posted on | March 21, 2010 | 22 Comments

I just finished watching ABS-CBN’s Harapan: The Vice-Presidential Debate. (For some reason that I couldn’t remember, I missed the Presidential Debate.)  I had fun watching this particular debate not only because the candidates provided the amusement themselves, but also because it took me back to my college days.

I think my very first  comment was, why the heck was Bayani Fernando wearing a hard hat? Only later on did I realize that he’s grounding his campaign on his engineering skills in the same way that Gibo is touting his skills as a pilot. Makes one wonder if a candidate’s educational background will matter this election. If that’s the case, then I might just vote for Jejomar Binay as he claims to be a graduate of UP Law, a Master of Public Administration, and a Harvard University student. I am biased of course. I did finish Public Administration in UP Diliman and had plans of studying law at my alma mater.

But if I am to decide on each candidate’s performance at the debate, I am inclined to vote for Mar Roxas.  Unlike Loren Legarda, Bayani Fernando, and Jejomar Binay who all seem to delight in mudslinging, Roxas was more intent on discussing issues than accomplishments and personalities. During the first round of the debate, he asked Jay Sonza if he was willing to work with the incoming administration of NoyNoy Aquino to solve the country’s problems. I initially thought it was very “statesman” of him to do so. But after watching the whole debate, I think the other candidates just didn’t have any dirt on Sonza.

Which brings me to my next question, does Sonza think he has any chance of winning the election? I think not. Even with his credibility as broadcast journalist, I do not think that he has enough experience to be the second top gun of the country. Running private companies and your own radio show is very different from running a country.  He better play nice with the other candidates if he hopes to get a cabinet position later.

Another candidate that showed a hint of statesmanship is Perfecto Yasay Jr. Too bad he wouldn’t win. I doubt that his Christian brothers have enough influence to get him the vice presidency. But he raised two fine points: that elected officials should be God-fearing and family-oriented. I wouldn’t vote for anyone who doesn’t fear a higher power because that would mean that he thinks of himself /herself as unaccountable to anyone but himself/herself.  And I certainly wouldn’t vote for someone who fools around — cheating, lying, and covering up comes easy for him/her. These aren’t the qualities I look for in a candidate.

As for Legarda, Binay, and Fernando… Well, they might have accomplished a lot of things but their conduct durng the debate was unbecoming of a statesman. They are, as I deem to be, traditional politicians. In short, TRAPO.  And I’ve had enough of them. Let’s bring back statesmen to the government, shall we?
